First things first, What are we gonna name it? I don't have any ideas for a name that isn't already taken.

I think that first the group should come up with a premise/theme for the game first before naming it. But naming it first might help get the ideas flowing. I'm not good at coming up with names..

That's a good idea though, coming up with a theme. Themes are a lot easier. Maybe an island/isolation theme? Or maybe an overly girly theme? Or how about a sort of ghost/death theme? I could come up with lots of themes!

Since it's a collaboration, I think the theme should be something that's pretty open-ended or wide, to allow more creative freedom.

I remember on an older forum there was the idea going around for a television based fangame (which I'm still sad nothing ever came out of), where the main character went through a bunch of television channels. Something like that seemed like a good way to incorporate everyone's individual style. So maybe a theme similar to that? I'd feel bad using that exact idea though since like I said, it was originally for another game and I still don't really know what's happening with said game.
Some brainstorming here... what about...
Since the forums are called Indie Somniac, something sleep-inspired sounds good. Doesn't necessarily have to be like Yume Nikki with the Nexus and ways into the dreamworld. Here's an idea- Maybe open world? There's the hub dream you exist in, and a bunch of dream towns you can visit, sort of like an RPG. The more people create these cities, the more we expand the map and fill in empty space. Although, then it wouldn't be as much as a "Dream" I guess if we stick with the somniac thing (which we don't really have to technically).
Now I'm getting Final Fantasy vibes with a dream airship and everything. It'd probably be easier to do it that way rather than a Zelda-esque way (unless we do some fancy teleporting magic to make the overworld blend together).

In my head I was imagining the fangame's premise to be pretty "standard", just fancy. Like, I didn't want to 'switch things up' too much, but make it really feature-packed. Add to Yume Nikki's ideas, but don't remove their base.
Alternate ways of accessing the dreamworld/other world would fit, I think. But doing something elaborate with distinct towns is IMO drifting out of "yume nikki inspired game" and more into "game in a similar genre". But that's just my opinion, I suppose.

I was thinking we could straight up make a 2kki homage with the nexus. It's a good way to put everyone's work on display right from the start. 2kki has a lot of magic for people with its insane variety starting out.
Here's what I propose: some of us name a few areas and assign areas we're interested in to ourselves. From the themes of all the areas put together, we can extrapolate a name.
For the areas, we can brainstorm like this, eg: Library- Warm and cozy feeling with three storeys of books and conversable NPCs. Very coherent.
So we'll provide a name, a feel, two important properties, and the general coherence of the location—a matrix of random events, geometric continuity, and general ability to understand it.
Oh, and anyone who wants access to the dropbox folder for the project should message me with your email ASAP, so I can share the folder with you.

Anyway, I personally think that there should be some sort of overall theme or motif so it isn't just a mess of everything. (When I thought of Indie Somniac, I was thinking insomnia but of course you can't dream like that haha) But maybe... this protag is having difficulty dreaming long enough? Something like that. It's really early in the morning for me right now, so I'll write something when I'm fully awake.

We can choose a theme that makes it easy to avoid the cliché worlds, such as the hospital, the gorey eyes world, and the poorly made neon world. They can be well made, but most people are so fed up with these they won't like them anyway.

Well I guess there are some ways that someone with insomnia could dream (in a game..aha), but the "difficulty dreaming long enough" thing sounds cool. Maybe there's a time limit..? I'm just throwing things out there aha But I also agree with Noyemik and Arale; we could just make something like Yume 2kki, since this is a collab and all. That might not be the most original thing to do, but it's easier and would be do-able in a collaboration like this (we could still add a little "twist" though). I just woke up so I might not be making very much sense;;

Okay, well the infrastructure works. We should set up some kind of work etiquette so that it makes it easy for users to pick up where others left off.

I think we should separate a set of maps for each participant. Like, make some maps in a planned size. Like 15-20 maps per person. How about it?

I think people should make a minimum of 5-10 maps if they want to be a programmer, and spriters should provide at least one sheet of an effects charset and/or a chipset.

I think I'll do the save theme tonight. I know it's early to get started but I want to do my part. Just tell me what kind of feel it should have, unless you'd rather leave it up to me (I'm just the technical director, not the creative lead)
