Hey everyone, this is Noyemi here with a game thread! Today I want to talk about Xanadu Revival, a PC98 remake of the classic Xanadu for PC-8801. It's one of my favourite RPGs, and I like to share! Look for links at the end of this post to get ahold of this hidden gem.
GETTING STARTED:
This game is a little different from most RPGs, so I'll start with a small guide to let you, the player, in on a few tips and things so you can actually play the game.
INTRO- This sequence is where you lay out the base stats for your character. After that, you have a chance to visit a hidden item shop that can net you a little extra cash for the next phase of the game, or more items to help you out in the dungeons. I recommend selling the spectacles, as all they do is let you see more details on an enemy (which is worthless).
This video shows also how to thwart the puzzle from the original game that makes it a bit of a headscratcher to make it to the main phase of the game.
MAIN PHASE- This is how much of the rest of the game will be. 2D exploration with choppy platforming, where you're transported to a top-down style of map to navigate either dungeons or fight enemies. The game actually autosaves at certain points (and saves cost money) so it's not beneficial to know how to save whenever you want—you're going to need all the money you can get.
SHOPS- Some shops are a little different than in other RPGs.
INN- This is actually where you increase your max HP. It's also cheap healing, but bear in mind it makes full restoration more expensive when you increase your max HP.
HEALERS- You can buy a full restoration here.
GUILDS- You buy keys to open dungeon doors here.
TEMPLE- If you have enough experience from either melee or magic, you can level up in one of those areas here.
FOOD- Purchase food here. Food heals you a little over time as it's consumed, and it's an absolutely necessary resource.
COMBAT:
You can fight with melee and magic—space to fire magic and bumping into enemies to melee them. Enemies' movement speed is based on their agility relative to yours, so be sure to spend enough money to at least be one step faster than starting enemies. Defeating an enemy with melee or magic will net you experience for either fighting style.
ODDITIES AND TRAPS:
TREASURE- Treasure can be destroyed by magic, so try not to hammer space just to quickly kill a creature. This is important because...
ENCOUNTERS- Encounters in a specific area are limited. Yes, it's possible to kill all the enemies in this game. So come to it with a strategy that will maximize resource efficiency. Don't take too much damage, don't spend too much money on equipment too early or too late, and try to avoid destroying treasure since it's in limited supply.
WEAPONS AND SPELLS- Weapons and spells in this game get stronger as you use them. So that longsword? It'll be worth less than your dagger by a long shot if you purchase it AFTER killing all the enemies in the first level. Plan your purchases carefully, because the same goes for spells.
BOSSES- Bosses, unlike other enemies, are screen-filling and fought from the 'exploration' perspective. Be careful and ration your supplies because these suckers are tough!
LEVELS- Can be traversed in any order, but enemies do get stronger on later levels. It can be a good idea to save some enemies for later gold harvesting in early levels.
Dungeons- Dungeons must be lit with a lamp for you to see. Hit M for the map and try not to die to the usually 9-grouped enemy clusters.
